Brash, fresh-faced new indiepop from Down Under...
By Blurt Staff
Headed our way are Australia's Grates with a whirlwind of SXSW appearances next week followed by a handful dates in NYC and L.A. Who are the Grates, you ask? Their second album,Teeth Lost, Hearts Won, has already been met with wide critical acclaim in Australia. It was produced by Peter Katis (Interpol/The National), and both Kori Gardner from Mates of State and Tim Fite guest on the album, and the band is in the process of nailing down a U.S. deal.
The Brisbane 3-piece already has a number of peer fans, among them Ben Lee and the aforementioned Mates of State, and their sound, a riotous femme-pop steered blend of contemporary (Arcade Fire meets Black Kids) and classic (Sparks plus, if you can dig it, older Aussie band the Divinyls - check lyrics like "sex without the cum" in the infectious tune "Carve Your Name" is the kind of bring-the-house-down stuff that has ‘em winning over audiences wherever they go.

It all sounds just "great" to us...
